Interview with Barry about Orson Welles as the Shadow coming soon

Hey everybody!

I haven't posted here in a while and that's just because I really haven't had a lot of anything to post.  I have been listening to a L O T of OTR in the past month, anywhere from 5 to 9 hours a day, believe it or not.  I'm getting deep into some series and hearing things I never knew existed inside of them.

Hopefully soon, I will start writing again about some of the things I have learned during all of this extra time spent listening.

I estimate I have listened to about 10,000 shows the last 2 years.  That's a lot of listening!

Still working hard on The Crazy World of Vic and Sade site. I'm more than half way done with the series now and I am hoping by June or July I can do a very similar website with the Fibber McGee and Molly show.  I know you folks are shy about commenting on the blog (or for that matter, voting even) but I am asking you, would you like to see a Fibber McGee and Molly blog where I go through all the episodes, characters, jokes, soundbites, etc?  I think it would be fun.

PLEASE COMMENT ON IT!

See you real soon (hopefully) with the Shadow interview I promised and more fun stuff...

  1. Happy New Year, Jimbo. Glad you are back. Not that you left. The Fibber thing would be interesting. The early 30s and 40s are not as interesting to me as the later 40s and 50s. Just my opinion.

  2. Hi Stranger. Happy new year to you also. :)

I agree about the FM&M (say 1940 on...) but that's not really very complete if I did it that way.

I'd want it to be complete or not do it at all. So... we need to come up with ideas how to keep everyone interested. Maybe I could do one from the early days one, one from the later days the next and alternate. Of course that would throw things out of whack too.

I do understand where you are coming from as those episodes after Harold Peary left are the best ones (not that he had anything to do with it.)

    Ideas are welcomed.

  3. Going in sequence is ok with me. Otherwise it might get confusing. Highlighting it when new characters are introduced and things like that. The years Molly had drinking problems and not in the program while getting treatment is of interest.

  4. Maybe I won't do FM&M :) Maybe I'll do another show. Any ideas?

  5. Not sure you should give up on FM&M. The early shows were much like all the early comedies. People showed up for a minute or two and left. Later on their was more of a reliance on skits, like Molly learning to drive. I found those more interesting. They also went from a 30 minute show to a fifteen minute show. Most of their time they were under the influence of Johnson Was and Wilcox. Also, when did Tinie enter the show?

  6. Nah, I haven't given up on anything.

I wonder why people (other than you, BB) won't comment? :)

Should I start at Fibber McGee and Company or when Molly comes back - or should I start at the beginning?

  7. From a historical point of view, why not at the beginning. Because the show really evolves from it start to the finish. I wish others would respond as well as they MUST have opinions about this.

  8. Oh well...

I have done a couple of "test runs" - that is, I have approached the show like I do Vic and Sade when I make notes. I can tell you that a venture of this sort for a show that has over 700 shows (that's 2 years if I did one everyday) would be a tremendous amount of work.

FM&M is loaded with tiny minutae that is time consuming to keep track of. And the shows last twice as long as Vic and Sade.

On the other hand, I could chronicle Bill Stern (something that needs to be done as you can nowhere find what's in each show) - and it only last 15 minutes and there aren't that many surving show (at least, not 700.)

  9. Bill Stern sounds interesting, but, not sure what one can say other than he had a wild imagination of the facts. He was a good story teller and he let accuracy be dammed.

  10. Not a lot to say.. except what is on "reel two" on July XX, 1945?

The fact is, no one knows. It's never been written down. There are many, many fascinating (albeit some unbelievable) stories that are impossible to find because no one knows where to look.

I've always wanted to do the Stern thing.

I'd love to do the FM&M thing - but I think I would need help. And you know how hard it is to find help.
