It's often been written that Ripley was very eccentric (as you can imagine.) I have read that he collected automobiles - and had over 50 - yet he didn't know how to drive.
While he states his materials as facts, it's been pointed out in a biography about Ripley that he was "...a cross between PT Barnum and Bill Stern."
